Peter Fischli - Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication
Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication is a book published on the occasion of Peter Fischli’s exhibition People Planet Profit at LUMA Arles (July 5, 2025 – January 11, 2026).
Peter Fischli first came to prominence through his groundbreaking collaboration with the late David Weiss as the conceptual duo Fischli and Weiss. His solo practice continues their longstanding critical engagement with the aesthetics of the everyday and systems of meaning, through works that playfully upend the distinctions between art and the systems, objects, and images that organize daily life.
From cover to cover, a filmstrip-like sequence captured by Fischli with his phone unfolds in a dense and kaleidoscopic surfeit of images chronicling the exhibition. With contributions by author and cultural critic Diedrich Diederichsen and writer Caitlín Doherty, the book also includes a conversation between Peter Fischli, Vassilis Oikonomopoulos and Eimear Martin, and a series of vignettes by artist Andreas Selg.
More than a documentation of the exhibition at LUMA Arles, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication examines the ways in which the signs, symbols, and infrastructures of capitalism vie for our attention, endlessly circulating, choreographing our movements, and shaping our perceptions and emotions. In this book, Fischli refracts and returns the world back to us in subtly skewed and unexpected forms, revealing the architecture of a world in constant, dizzying flux.
