William Kentridge is one of the most protean artists of his generation. Combining drawing, film, sculpture, theater, and opera, he is renowned for his politically engaged practice. In conjunction with his new chamber opera The Great Yes, The Great No, which premiered at LUMA Arles in July 2024, the exhibition Je n'attends plus presents an ensemble of major works, some of which have never been seen before in Europe. Focusing on migration, the oppression of peoples, the transmission of history, and the role of the artist in a society under duress, the exhibition brings together a remarkable body of experimental and performative work.
A richly illustrated catalogue bears witness to these two events and explores their philosophical, historical, and artistic implications. For the occasion, contributions from Mwenya Kabwe, Anne Lafont, and Nhanhla Mahlangu, major authors in the fields of art history, theater, and music, have been brought together. These texts are accompanied by conversations with the artist conducted by philosopher Judith Butler, theorist and critic Homi K. Bhabha, and LUMA Arles’s artistic director Vassilis Oikonomopoulos. An essay by curator and art critic Flora Katz also features in the book.
